IZ: Well, he came from Italy with my grandmother, my mom and my uncle Gianfranco. JB: Ha! Your grandfather actually opened the place on April Fool’s Day? Joe Bonadio: Caffe Trieste turns 63 this month. On the occasion of Caffe Trieste’s 63rd Anniversary, Ida was kind enough to sit with me for the below interview. I’ve also known his granddaughter Ida Zoubi, the caffe’s co-owner, for many years. Sadly, Papa Gianni passed away in 2016, at the age of 96. Known to everyone as Papa Gianni, he was larger than life in this neighborhood, known as much for his singing prowess as his effusive friendliness. I had the honor to meet Gianni Giotta, Caffe Trieste’s late founder, several times. And more than any one establishment, Caffe Trieste still exemplifies the old-school style and family vibe of traditional North Beach. For better than two generations, this little Italian caffe has served as a makeshift sanctuary and community center for the people living here–all of them. Along with a broader version of our North Beach light fare menu, you can enjoy Pizzette, Gelato, Focaccia sandwiches, tantalizing salads and other items.When it comes to the culture and history of North Beach, Caffe Trieste holds a unique position in our beloved neighborhood. Our newest locations serve up Operatic, Jazz and other musical genres almost everyday in typical Caffe Trieste informal settings. The Caffe, along with it's sister locations in the SF Bay Area, approach 2 million cups of coffee served each year. ![]() The Giotta Family's famous Saturday afternoon concert takes place each week (go to Our Music button for more information).
